In the midfield department, you can score big points but alas, the costs are also a lot higher. Do you have a midfield powerhouse or be a bit more conservative and rely on two 20+ goal strikers?

What Are My Midfielder Options?

There is a bit more variance in the price of midfielders. The cheapest you can get a midfielder for is £4.5 million but the maximum is a whopping £12 million.

What Difference Can a Midfielder Make to My Score?

If we look at last year’s results as a comparison;

The best performing midfielder by a long way was was Sanchez (£12m) who is at Arsenal. Sanchez gained 264 points. If you take the number of players who scored at least 1 point last season (158) the average score for a midfielder was 72 pts, I would be looking for players around the 110 mark as a baseline.

Who are the Ones to Look Out For?

Sanchez is obviously the one everyone will be watching closely but he is expensive! Last year his form was stunning, 24 goals and 10 assists. There are big rumours that he is on his way out at Arsenal, we shall see.

Ali has a better £ per PT ratio than Sanchez and if Ali can improve on his 18 goals from last season he may challenge for top midfielder.

Kevin de Bruyne is simply the assist master! 18 times he helped a team mate score, expect more of the same this season from de Bruyne.

Anything Else I Need to Consider?

The midfield is where it is won and lost for many teams. The top players are expensive but they can soon rack up the points. This year I’m taking a cautious approach to my midfield and saving my pennies for an awesome attack but this could be a risky strategy and as I’m typing this, I’m having second thoughts but anyway…

The four midfielders I have picked are as follows;

Wilfried Zaha is a player that can be as frustrating as much as he can be brilliant but it was his score of 149 that made me choose him. He is always likely to get playing time and 22.3% of teams have him selected so I’ll go with the crowd on this one. Crystal Palace play Huddersfield in the first game so this also influenced my decision.

Next up is Matic of Chelsea, now this selection may be problematic is Matic does complete a transfer to Manchester United but I’d be willing to drop Valencia to accommodate Matic. His point score of 105 isn’t amazing but I feel he will improve this year and at £5 million, I feel it’s a bargain.

£8 million man Pogba is my next selection for midfield. 115 points scored last year is ok but it was his first season back and I see him being the supply route for Lakuku, could be quite a partnership!

West Brom’s Matt Phillips takes up the fourth spot in my five-man midfield. At £6 million he picked up the same score as Pogba last year, a suck it and see selection this one!

Last but not least, I have gone for Everton’s Mirallas. His total of 119 is good, he also had 8 assists and 4 goals. As Everton’s general quality will be improved by their recent splurges in the transfer market, if selected, Mirallas will improve.
